March 2021

Dear Friends,

For 20 years, the NetHope community has been united by a vision for a more equitable and just world, where everyone can flourish on a planet that is protected. Last week, International Women’s Day once again put a spotlight on how far we have to go. NetHope believes that digital technology is a powerful tool on the journey towards empowering women across the globe and alleviating poverty. But merely giving marginalized women access to technology is not enough. This recent NetHope blog, based on the findings of the USAID NetHope Global Broadband and Innovations Alliance, explores effective practices to close the gender digital divide, addressing root causes rather than symptoms.

Covid-19 has in many ways made our world even more unequal, thrusting vulnerable communities further into poverty, and so an equitable global Covid-19 vaccination rollout remains high on our priority list. We have had two productive calls with NetHope Members sharing their experiences responding to previous health crises, and identifying opportunities for collaboration. Next month, we will be hosting a third call, joined by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD). Through this call we will enter the next phase of our collaboration; mapping offers and gaps. I look forward to seeing our community’s role evolve and solidify as we continue to collaborate and learn from the immense amount of experience and wisdom we have amongst our Members and partners.

We’re also busy planning our 20th anniversary NetHope Global Summit. It’s going to be a true celebration of the incredible impact our Members and technology partners have had over the last two decades and continue to have as we unite together. We hope you’ll join us! More details coming soon.

Warmly, and in peace,
Lance Pierce
NetHope CEO

NetHope scales AI Ethics conversations among nonprofits

In order to guide the design and use of AI toward optimal public benefit, we in the nonprofit sector have a responsibility to understand the risks and to learn how to anticipate consequences of the technology solutions we’re creating and using, and to take deliberate steps to address them. The AI Ethics for Nonprofits toolkit builds capacity in the sector to design, deploy and use AI responsibly and ethically.
