Working from home, especially for those who may not have a home-office space, can make it hard to separate our emotions from our work lives. This reality has led me to think about and question why organizations often reject, rather than welcome, emotions in the workplace. Given the mental, physical, and emotional toll the past year has taken on so many of us, it is important to acknowledge our emotions and allow ourselves and our co-workers to... feel. In fact, restricting the ‘personal’ and the experience and expression of emotions at work can lead to unhealthy suppression of emotions. Suppressing emotions can lead to physical stress on the body and potentially leave people feeling depleted, overwhelmed, and burnt out.

One of the key takeaways shared by panelist Sandra Rondzik Popik on IHHP’s livecast “The Collective Wisdom of High-Performing Women”, was to “make things personal, and not [lose] humanity” in our work. Her story, based on her personal experience, relayed the importance of understanding our own emotional needs and the emotional needs of our coworkers. My hope is that through empathy, compassion, and connection, valuing and harnessing the power of emotions (and emotional intelligence), will be seen as an organizational superpower and competitive advantage.

Permission to Feel: The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-being and Success by Marc Brackett, Ph.D.

Marc Brackett Ph.D., Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, is on a mission to help the world understand that the biggest part of what makes us human is our emotions. His book Permission to Feel: The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success makes the scholarly and practical case for the role Emotional Intelligence plays in learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, physical health, and performance.

Dr. Brackett encourages all of us to become emotion scientists instead of emotion judges, through understanding and utilizing his step-by-step pathway for understanding, validating, and regulating emotions. Many adults and children struggle daily because they lack an emotional vocabulary, often suppress their feelings, and are generally emotionally unskilled.

The RULER system outlined in the book provides a guide to Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion. This book provides critical learning on the development of emotion skills that can be deployed at home, at school, and at work, unlocking the power of emotions to help our children, organizations, and society thrive.
