This month we had another opportunity to sit down with the Eliminate Downtime Committee. We took the time to reflect on past hackathons and discuss how we move forward with our ideas and discussions.

Over the past few months, the hackathons have given us a platform to come together and collaborate with members of the industry despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. I’m excited to see how quickly we have gotten accustomed to new ways of working. It did not stop us from pursuing our goal to eliminate downtime in construction. If you are curious to learn more about what a hackathon is and how it can help you understand data-sharing better you should sign up to receive our blueprint as soon as it is available.

This month we look at the traits that create a resilient organization, the shifts in society that generate the need for new technology, and a great example of data-sharing that can inspire the construction industry.

This Month's Key Questions:
1. How can industry players in construction collaborate to build a safer industry by sharing data?
2. How can you implement the traits that create a resilient organization?
3. What challenges might we face in the transition to Industry 4.0?

DATA-SHARING AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT FOLLOW

Engadget: "Ford begins sharing its driver-collected accident data with other car makers"

The construction industry isn't the only one interested in the potential of data-sharing. There is a consensus that we need to break down silos to create more effective and efficient processes. In this example, we look to the automotive industry for inspiration. Ford has been collecting driver data about accidents, making it available among other Ford vehicles for a while. It has created safer roads by predicting accidents and showing drivers which areas are high-risk. Now it has taken data-sharing a step further. The collected data will be available to other car manufacturers. An initiative that’s part of an industry-wide plan to create a Safety-Related Traffic Information ecosystem, backed by the European Commission.

BE RESILIENT IN THE FACE OF CRISIS

Deloitte: "Getting Business Resilience Right

Resilience is at the heart and mind of many businesses these days, and rightfully so. Many were caught off guard during the pandemic, and we want to make sure that we are prepared for any unforeseen circumstances in the future. Deloitte has taken a look at the five characteristics that leaders can implement to build a strong organization. There is a tendency to focus on multiple traits at once as they tend to overlap and complement each other. Organizations need to understand what it takes to respond and recover from crises. The faster they can change their mindset, the more resilient they will be in the face of crisis.

START BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Forbes: "Crossing The Chasm For Industry 4.0"

The use of technology in construction is about to launch us into Industry 4.0. We have moved past the days of early adopters, and now more businesses see the positive impact that new technology can have on the construction industry. Several factors have influenced this transition. From the global pandemic to generational shifts, perspectives and expectations are changing. As organizations begin to adopt new technology, we will see it spread and grow. Now is the time to start building for the future.
