JUST A THOUGHT

"Prepare for the predictable, but be ready to adapt when the unexpected tries to ruin your day."

Boiling A Quarter-Century of Experience Down Into 5 Points

We have been blessed to experience a quarter-century of service to over 1,000 clients in almost every sector imaginable since Bernstein Crisis Management – then called Bernstein Communications – was launched on January 4, 1994. At that time, I was told by pundits hat it would be impossible to make a full time living engaged in crisis management PR. Crisis management was largely associated with reactive, after-the fire-is-burning communications versus the holistic approach of training, preparedness, and response we use today – something we’re proud to have helped change in the decades since. Boards of directors and C-Suites, their insurance companies and their investors, are all waking up to the role of crisis management PR in the day-to-day operations of any organization.

After 25 years of operating and growing this crisis management consultancy, you’d think I would have learned some profound lessons, right? Well, I don’t know just how profound they are, but these are probably the five most important concepts I’ve come to believe about operating a business:

• Monetize your passion, but don’t compromise your passion for money.

• Under-promise and over-deliver, never the reverse.

• Surprise your clients with how available you are; corollary: don’t take more work than you can handle.

• Know what makes your business different and be able to explain that in short- or long-form, in writing or verbally.

• Have a commanding Internet presence.

All that tempered by my favorite personal slogan, from the British philosopher Ernistine Ulmer, “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.”

Thank you to our myriad clients, past and present, and to our amazing cadre of associates globally who help us create our own “A-Teams” for each client need. Thank you to my son and company VP, Erik Bernstein, who joined the company 11 years ago. We know we’re needed, and we’re ready. Stercus accidit.
