Harriet Tubman, the former slave turned abolitionist, became one of the most famous women in American history. A lesser-known, but fascinating, story is her tie to Georgetown County, SC, through her great-nephew, James Bowley. This summer, a nine-foot sculpture of Tubman will be on public display at the Joseph H. Rainey Park in historic Georgetown beginning Aug. 1 before being transported to Brookgreen Gardens on Oct. 31, where it will be displayed until the end of the year. Take advantage of this limited opportunity for a glimpse at one of America’s greatest heroines.

While exploring the Hammock Coast, enjoy a delicious meal at Hanser House, owned and operated by resident Juanita “Nita” Hanser, who has been part of the Hammock Coast restaurant scene for over 55 years. Known and loved by locals as “Granny,” Mrs. Hanser and three generations of her family pride themselves on crafting home-cooked, Lowcountry-inspired dishes for the whole family. Their excellent food and friendly service are so popular that reservations are recommended.

The boom of rice production in South Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries once made Georgetown County the wealthiest in the United States. Though the industry certainly has since changed, the financial success of the time can still be seen in the historic homes and plantations that remain. Get a first-hand look at the life from that time during the annual Tour of Historic Plantations & Homes, taking place Mar. 31 and Apr. 1. Spots are limited, so be sure to purchase your tour tickets now.
