The Weekly Raider
October 6, 2020

Today, Tuesday, October 6, we celebrate National Coaches Day! Upon creating Coaches Day in 1972, President Richard Nixon stated, "Coaches are highly qualified teachers - in highly specialized fields. But more than that, they are friends and counselors who help instill in their players important attitudes that will serve them all their lives." We are so grateful for all of our Gulliver Prep coaches, and we thank you for your unwavering dedication to our Raider student-athletes.

SCHOOL NEWS AND UPDATES

Behind the Scenes with RSN
Middle School students are learning about all aspects of running a successful newsroom by creating Raider Student Network's (RSN) daily morning show. The student-produced production covers daily happenings, highlights sports and scholastic achievements, and covers a wide range of topics promoting the students’ authentic voice. Click on the button to watch as Amelia Santini '25 and Joana Zica '25 explain how each episode is created.

World Smile Day
On October 2, students and faculty at the Marian C. Krutulis PK-8 Campus celebrated Word Smile Day, showing off their best masked smiles and "smizes". Did you know that the smiley face was created by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Massachusetts, in 1963? Years later, Mr. Ball thought that everyone throughout the world should devote one day per year to smiles and kind acts. Thus, World Smile Day was born, and has been celebrated on the first Friday in October each year since 1999.

Faculty Spotlight: Mr. Cunningham
Each week, through our Faculty Spotlight series we invite our community to get to know a Gulliver Prep teacher. Last week, we introduced Upper School’s Mrs. Carla Carmona, and this week, we feature Mr. Cody Cunningham, one of our Middle School social studies teachers. Click on the button to learn about Mr. Cunningham's role in revamping the social studies curriculum, his journey to Gulliver, his favorite quarantine recipe, and more.

Commended Students
In addition to our three National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, Gulliver Prep is proud to announce that 10 members of the Class of 2021 earned Commendation in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Lucas Cavalieri, Isabel Cuellar, Francesco Di Mise, Nicole Hillis, Hayaat Kay-Ramos, Kamal Kay-Ramos, David Krajewski, Everest Maya-Tudor, Christopher McCormick, and Lewis Weaver have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise, placing among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 PSAT.

Fall is Here!
