Poetry in Motion
Last week, Upper School dance students showcased the final product of a layered project that began with writing a poem based on mental health, COVID-19, global warming, having a voice, human trafficking, and more. The project continued with self-discovery, guided movement exploration, and listening to music and its connection to color, emotions, and patterns. Students applied this year’s dance program theme -S.T.A.R.S. (Soaring Talented Artists Rising Strong) - into their original works, choreographing dances inspired by their personal poems with social, political, or religious connections. Some dancers performed live for their classmates and a virtual audience, while others shared their projects remotely for the group.

Faculty Spotlight: Mr. Charron
Each week through our Faculty Spotlight series, we invite our community members to get to know Gulliver Prep teachers across every division. Last week, we introduced Middle School's Mrs. Llano and this week, our Faculty Spotlight features Mr. Claude Charron, Upper School Engineering, Computer Science, and Biomedical Science Department Chair. Click on the button to learn about Mr. Charron's summer RV trip to several National Parks, his goals for the school year, favorite local restaurant, and more.

First Grade Word Detectives
First graders are practicing their investigative skills as "word detectives," studying words closely like pieces of evidence. Students are encouraged to wonder about words and make discoveries to help them understand how language works. In conjunction with this "Word Detectives" reading unit, a phonics unit titled "The Case of the Silent e," challenges students to use their investigative strategies to solve tricky words, as they learn, for example, how the silent "e" changes the vowel sound in words. Each day the Super Secret Detective Agency (SSDA) assigns a "mission" for students to investigate in their reading, and awards official SSDA badges!

This past Saturday, Gabe Taylor '20 made his collegiate football debut as a safety for Rice University. The majority of Gabe’s 19 years have been spent honoring the legacy of his late brother, Sean Taylor '01. Click on the button to learn more about his journey via the Washington Post.

Music Department Still in Harmony
Members of the band and orchestra typically grow close through performances, trips, and classes together throughout the year. However, 2020 has challenged these traditions and the group’s sense of camaraderie, as COVID-19 restrictions dictate that the majority of musicians cannot so much as see each other in person. As a reminder, if you're planning on traveling or hosting relatives this holiday season, please review our travel policy outlined in the Family-Student COVID-19 Procedures document. This policy states that any student returning to Miami from a foreign destination under a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice or under travel restrictions by state or local authorities, or whose household member has returned from such a destination, will be required to stay home for 14 days prior to returning to campus.
