The "Smeyes" Challenge
Did you know that smiling behind your face mask - even when others can't see it - can positively affect your own emotions and the people you interact with? Mrs. Perez's fourth graders have been perfecting their "smeyes" - that's smiling with your eyes, of course! Last week, students used Flipgrid to record themselves smiling with their eyes while wearing their masks. Mrs. Mitzie Perez P '18 '25, Lower School Faculty and Grade Level Coordinator, and Mrs. Cindy Gonzalez P '30 '31, Lower School Technology Faculty, teamed up to make a video compilation and bring "smeyes" to all! Cross-Cultural Competence
Recently, Middle School World Languages Faculty member, Ms. Catalina Lopez '02 P '35, invited a pair of guest speakers to her Spanish B classes to speak about Puerto Rico. Dr. Isabel Lopez-Healy, Middle School Science Faculty, spoke in person to one class while Mrs. Dyonara Cruz P '26 visited another class via Zoom. The students enjoyed learning about Puerto Rico from Puerto Ricans themselves, as each speaker spoke lovingly about their island and shared an authentic perspective. They had an opportunity to learn about the culture, different places on the island, the food, the people, and the music. Experiences like this help students develop cross-cultural competence so that they can be culturally open-minded, and well-rounded citizens of the world.

Fall Sports Wrap-Up
With the fall sports season in the books, we want to take a moment to reflect on the outstanding achievements of our Raider student-athletes and coaches. During a season like no other, our student-athletes represented Gulliver with impeccable integrity and character. In addition to their stellar athletic efforts, they also excelled in the classroom, tallying a cumulative GPA of 3.65 for all varsity-level fall sports teams. 7 Questions on Mindfulness
Ms. Carolina Williams, Learning Specialist at the Upper School Miller Campus, has been practicing mindfulness for 15 years. She was first exposed to the practice when she was dealing with severe pain after having surgery, and the hospital used Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as a pain management method. She was so pleased with the results that she decided to implement MBSR with her students and get certified as a Mindfulness Coach. Read on to learn more about how Ms. Williams is bringing mindfulness into the classroom at Gulliver, her tips for starting a mindfulness practice, and more. Be sure to check out the new Mindfulness Corner in future editions of The Weekly Raider!
