National Chess K-12 Showdown
Middle and Upper School students recently competed in the National Chess K-12 Showdown. Due to COVID-19 concerns, this online tournament replaced K-12 Grade Nationals, which are typically held annually, live, in December. The K-12 Showdown attracted over 2,800 players from across the United States, as Gulliver Prep fielded teams in grades 7-11. Three teams placed in the top five in their respective divisions, including Gulliver’s 11th grade team, comprised of Matteo Akl, Mark Liberman, Nicolas Puttre, and Eli Rich, which tied for first place and finished as co-champions. Middle School Yearbook Gold Medal
The Middle School yearbook staff continues to work their magic of capturing Gulliver Prep's essence, year after year. Led by Ms. Cori Basulto-Fraga, Middle School Journalism Faculty member, the 2019-20 yearbook staff created a dynamic, multidimensional, and visually captivating design that is truly “EPIC.” The book recently earned a Gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). JK Explores Cultures from Around the World

To close out the fall semester, JK students embarked on a culture study where they learned about people from all around the world, bringing diversity into the classroom. The students were introduced to varying traditions, holidays, foods, languages, and traditional clothing. This year, they were able to connect via Zoom with people from Canada, England, Scotland, Spain, and more! “In connection with our commitment to diversity, learning about different cultures that may be different from our own, helps develop empathy and broadens our learning horizons,” said Ms. Cristina Torres, Primary School Faculty member. Teachers and students sent videos back to their guests to say thank you and teach them about some of the interesting things we know about Miami and America.

Architecture: Beyond the Classroom
In addition to traditional classroom learning, Upper School architecture students were able to participate in several workshops and guest lectures this fall, as well as connect with alumni. Ms. Emily Wilson, AIA LEED, Architecture Faculty member, held after school portfolio workshops for seniors, helping them prepare their portfolios for college and future internship applications. Students also engaged in various workshops and lectures with guest speakers, and to close out the year, the Architecture Club hosted its annual Napkin Sketch Competition. Mrs. Christina Manrique who taught architecture at Gulliver for 40 years and started the competition, joined in on the fun. To learn more, click on the button.
