CARES Act Relief Funds

On behalf of Governor Gordon, the Wyoming Office of Tourism (WOT) alongside the Wyoming Travel Industry Coalition, are pleased to share we have procured $5 million of CARES Act Relief Funds (CARF) for Wyoming’s lodging tax boards to foster economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis at the local level. This DMO Relief fund is an extension of the 2020 program and should be viewed the same.

The allocations are based on the similar methodology as in 2020, based on your share of the total lodging tax collected statewide in FY 2019 (the last year of data pre-COVID). To apply for these funds, please review the DMO Relief Fund Toolkit, then apply here.

For questions on your eligible amount, please contact Jim Wollenburg.

The Great American West is busy preparing its 2022 regional map, and we’d like to extend the opportunity to advertise your destination on this important promotional piece. After a hiatus in 2021 due to COVID-19, this piece is sure to be even more in-demand as travel ramps back up this year!

Every year, more than 10,000 Great American West maps are printed and circulated across the cooperative’s international markets, including distribution in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Benelux region, the Nordic region and Australia/New Zealand. This map reaches both the travel/tourism trade and consumers to educate and inspire travel to our beautiful region.

A spot on the back of this map can be yours for $600. Space is limited, and artwork is due by Wednesday, Aug. 11. Additional advertising opportunities through the Great American West partnership, including the regional guide, coming soon, Don’t miss out on this opportunity to market yourself to an international audience!

In June, Wyoming partnered with Conde Nast Traveler’s Women Who Travel podcast for a custom, sponsored episode on the topic of responsible tourism. WOT selected this theme to help amplify the WY Responsibly campaign, encouraging travelers to thoughtfully consider travel plans throughout the state, exploring wide-open spaces, iconic destinations, as well as hidden gems and local businesses. WOT’s Diane Shober served as one of the key experts on the episode, speaking to destinations all across the state. A digital recap of the podcast is also available on Conde Nast Traveler.

On the editorial front, as a direct result from her coordinated press trip to Wyoming in May, freelance travel writer Cassandra Brooklyn published an article in The Daily Beast sharing helpful tips on how to plan for and spend time responsibly in the outdoors this summer. Cassandra shared tips on trail etiquette, fire safety and went into detail on wildlife safety, featuring quotes from WY Responsibly Steward, Josh Metten, a professional naturalist with Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures in Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks.

Additionally, stemming from our partnership with South Dakota, Outside ran a piece highlighting top destinations along the Black to Yellow Route. It included Devils Tower National Monument, the wildflower meadows near Sundance, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and ended in Yellowstone National Park.

Governor Gordon in Kayak

The Bighorn Basin Outdoor Recreation

On July 17th, the Bighorn Basin Outdoor Recreation Collaborative (BBORC) held a kickoff event for the Bighorn River Blueway Trail Event in Manderson & Basin. Governor Mark Gordon not only was the guest speaker but took a float down the Bighorn as well.

What is the Bighorn River Blueway Trail? The Bighorn River Blueway Trail is a proposed river trail that would start at the Wedding of the Waters south of Thermopolis, Wyoming and end at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area in Lovell, Wyoming. From there, recreationalists could continue all the way to the Yellowtail Dam in Fort Smith, Montana. This trail offers non-motorized water recreationalists a wide variety of opportunities, including wildlife watching, ever-changing scenery, fishing (over a dozen game fish inhabit the river) and camping.

The creation of this trail has the potential to bring significant recreation economic growth to the communities along the Bighorn River, including Thermopolis, Worland, Manderson, Greybull, Basin and Lovell. It could enhance revenue opportunities for businesses that sell or rent outdoor equipment, shuttle services, fishing guides and overnight accommodations.
