Motorcoach Familiarization Tour

The week of September 13-17th, the Wyoming Office of Tourism hosted 3 qualified motor coach companies on a 1500-mile familiarization tour along the Salt-to-Stone and Rockies-to-Tetons route. In all they met with over 30 partners including restaurants, lodging options, attractions, local artists and museums. The overwhelming reaction was “I had no idea how much more Wyoming had to offer!” They all were eager to start working on new and extended itineraries that will most likely begin in 2023.

What became known as the “Wyoming Rendezvous Tour” started 52 million years in the past in the Fossil Basin area and then spent the majority of the time exploring the history of the Mountain Man, Rendezvous points, Native Americans, emigrant trails and wildlife as they circled the Wind River Mountain Range. The stories told along the way fascinated the tour operators as they recounted them often and connected them to the other stops. The scenery of course left them speechless and wanting to return.

The tour operators were selected through meetings held at ABA and NTA, as they had expressed interest in growing their Wyoming itineraries. While the motor coach industry has been very active in Wyoming this summer, we intentionally kept this familiarization small, knowing we would be hosting additional ones in the future in other areas of the state.

If you are interested in more information on working with the motorcoach industry or participating in a future familiarization tour contact Amy Larsen, 307-777-6706

IPW 2021 (Las Vegas, NV) - September 18-22, 2021

The Wyoming Office of Tourism (WOT) recently completed participation in US Travel's IPW 2021. As the leading inbound travel trade show, past IPWs have generated more than $5.5 billion in future travel by connecting U.S. travel exhibitors with travel buyers and media to promote their product and negotiate future business, securing America’s position as a foremost global travel destination and showcasing the best of what the U.S. has to offer.

This year's attendance was about 2,600 delegates (700 international attendees), which was noticeably down from the 6,200 participants in 2019. With the US borders still closed, Wyoming was forced to limit participation while still trying to remain highly visible. Overall, WOT conducted 45 qualified, twenty-minute appointments as well as 15 additional walk-up appointments with travel trade and media. Along with the productivity of the show, the attendees received some of the best news during the first full day of the tradeshow: The US border between EU/UK is projected to open in November. This year's IPW was a model for restarting international trade shows safely, with the health of all attendees as their top priority.

Upcoming international tradeshows: Go West Summit (Reno, NV) - Feb 22-24, 2022; International RoundUp (Fargo, ND) - May 14-17.

For more information about international outreach, please contact Jim Wollenburg at jim.wollenburg@wyo.gov or James Scoon at james.scoon@wyo.gov.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Wyoming Frontier Prison

Wyoming Frontier Prison

The summer of 2021 at the Wyoming Frontier Prison was a wonderfully busy one, especially in comparison to the summer of 2020. Last year was a tough one for the former Wyoming State Penitentiary turned Historic Site, with tour revenues down 32%, although we were lucky enough to see a little over 10,000 visitors during a global pandemic. The summer of 2021 is a wonderful rebound!

The Wyoming Frontier Prison welcomed 7,937 visitors from June 1, 2021 through August 31, 2021, which is a 25% increase, or 1,592 more people, from last year’s numbers during the same months. Of those visitors, 311 came from our very own Carbon County, which means 96% of our visitors came from all over Wyoming and the U.S.A. The Wyoming Frontier Prison Staff was also happy to see 93 dogs this summer… yes, we are pet friendly!

If you haven’t had time to visit the Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins yet this year, we are still offering historic tours until Thursday, October 14th. Tour schedules change during September and October, so please be sure to check our website at www.wyomingfrontierprison.org. Our winter tour schedule begins on November 15, 2021.

Beginning on October 15, 2021 we will be closed to prepare for our Haunted Halloween Night Tours. The Halloween Tours are our largest fundraiser of the year, and they are a lot of fun! Reservations for the Halloween Tours will be available online on our website beginning October 1, 2021. Haunted Halloween Night Tours will run on October 29th, 30th, and 31st from 7 p.m. until Midnight.

The Halloween Masquerade will be Friday, October 22, 2021. This is an exclusive, adults-only, annual masked gathering featuring hors-d’oeuvres, adult beverages, dancing to live music and a spooky-fabulous atmosphere on the eve of Halloween. If you are interested in attending the Masquerade, please give us a call at 307-324-4422.

The Wyoming Frontier Prison would not be as successful as we are without our partners in crime at the Wyoming Office of Tourism, the Carbon County Visitors Council, the City of Rawlins, Carbon County, the Carbon County Tourism Committee and our local businesses. We sincerely thank everyone who did time with us this summer.

Historic Site Director
