In these unprecedented and uncertain times, ICLEI Africa stands with you all in solidarity and wishes you well on Africa Day 2020. As we reflect on Africa today and look toward a resilient urban future, in which our cities are healthy, thriving hubs, we are excited to launch RISE Africa, framed around Inspiring Action for Sustainable Cities, as well as ICLEI Africa’s Webinar Series: Building sustainable African cities during and after a pandemic.

“Our cities are the manifestation of our imaginations, relationships and life experiences – we make our cities. To make them inclusive, resilient, and restorative, it is up to us to reclaim African urban narratives. We need to boldly contribute our stories, ideas, expectations and actions. Only this way will we own and influence the future of our cities”.

~ Kobie Brand, Regional Director: ICLEI Africa

Join us as we explore the RISE Africa themes over the next few months through the RISE Africa Roadmap of online engagements, shared resources, webinars and video provocations. Together, we will build momentum for the RISE Africa Summit in May 2021.

To kick off the RISE Africa Roadmap, we invite you to participate in the RISE Africa Annual Photography Competition, taking place on Instagram. This year’s theme, Hidden Flows, aims to uncover the heartbeats of our cities by following five resource flows over the course of five months. Each month will focus on a different theme: June is for #food, July is for #waste, August is for #water, September is for #mobility and October is for #energy. To enter, follow @futureafricancities on Instagram, and use #hiddenflows and the theme of the month in your submitted images. Winners will be announced monthly and the grand winner will be announced in November 2020. For the full brief, please visit the RISE Africa website. We look forward to seeing your interpretations!
