Construction of the possible: Havana Art Biennial confirmed for April-May 2019 

The biggest visual arts event in Cuba, delayed by hurricane Irma, the 13th Havana Biennial is now due take place April 12 to May 12 2019. It will be " a space for art that understands creation as a living event or ongoing experience - networks of exchange, beyond the aesthetic autonomy and the traditional notion of authorship, with a transforming vocation and recognition of diversity." With projects all over the city the theme is "Construction of the possible".

 
 
 

Miguel Iglesias wins National Dance Award

Director of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Miguel Iglesias, is to receive Cuba's prestigious National Dance Award for his contribution to the development of contemporary dance on the island,  forging many collaborations with choreographers around the world and producing unforgettable performances.

 
 

Interview: Chucho Valdes looks back at 45 years of Irakere

"We studied the drums, like the batá, arará, yuka. We went to see the original Yoruba masses, inherited from slavery times and we incorporated them into popular dance music and jazz. The difference this made to the musical world was the Afro-Cuban power, an invincible music, a foundation" Chucho Valdes on the impact of Irakere.

Cuba Cine Imperfecto series

Series of screenings of Cuban feature films including 60s classics such as Memories of Underdevelopment, Lucia, rare screenings of Tomas Alea's A Cuban Fight Against Demons and The Last Supper through to more contemporary films such as Life is to Whistle. 

 
 
 
 

Eliades Ochoa

+ Buena Vista Social Club: Adios film,

Wed 25 April, London 


The former Buena Vista Social Club frontman makes his solo debut at the Royal Albert Hall, fronting his own band. Known as ‘Mr Chan Chan’ in his hometown of Santiago de Cuba, his unique guitar and vocal style has made him a champion of the string and percussion-driven Cuban country music. Part of La Linea 2018. The show will be followed by a special screening of the new documentary.


 
 

Eco-Cuba
Mon 30 April, London

A CineCuba evening on the advances made over the past decades in organic agriculture in the country. Presentation on Cuban eco-agronomy followed by a documentary about Finca Marta, a successful eco-agronomic farm near Havana.

Omar Puente Cuban Jazz Sextet

Superlative Cuban jazz violinist, Puente has worked with the likes of Courtney Pine and Denys Baptiste and appears here with his own hard-driving, rhythmically lithe band. 

 
 

Gente de Zona
Thu 24 May, London

Gente de Zona's UK debut last year brought their irresistible fusion of reggaeton, timba and other Cuban music genres delivered by a big band with exuberance and power. Since mega hit ‘Bailando’ with Enrique Iglesias in 2014, Gente de Zona has stormed the Latin charts with more hits like ‘Si no Vuelves’.

 

Ran Kan Kan: Havana Rumba
Sat 9 June, Oxford

Gerardo y su Rumbache will be playing authentic Cuban rumba, Cuban dancer Ariel Rios will lead a class and 24 piece Oxford based band Ran Kan Kan will perform Cuban big band style.
