Cuba's godmother of ballet, Alicia Alonso, and Carlos Acosta on her legacy



At the age of 98 the phenonemon that was Alicia Alonso, died last week but her legacy lives on across the island. Overcoming near blindness and numerous other obstacles that would have crippled lesser people, Alonso became one of the greatest ballerinas and starred in the most famous ballets all over the world. In 1948 she formed her own company, which eventually became the Cuban National Ballet.

“As the daughter of a small Caribbean island, Alonso confronted all the barriers, those who said ballet was an art of developed countries, that the Latino physique and temperament could not adjust to the needs of classical dance,” Former pupil Carlos Acosta said.

How the US blockade against Cuba impacts on the development of arts and culture

With the bill for losses to the Cuban economy caused by the US blockade in the last year alone amounting to 4.3 billion dollars, Cuba has presented a full report to the UN of the impact on all areas of life including the development of arts and culture - contracts cancelled due to  US  restrictions on banks, equipment made twice as expensive, and much more.


 
 

Chucho Valdes and the Cuban National Ballet celebrate 500 years of Havana

Who was Aponte?

Jose Antonio Aponte was a free black Cuban man - a visionary and artist who lived in Havana 200 years ago.  He led a rebellion against slavery 'the Aponte Conspiracy' but is also known for his visionary antiracist 'book of paintings'. A major exhibition of graphic design from Cuba’s ‘golden age’. It brings together 115 posters and 70 magazines distributed across the globe by OSPAAAL: an organisation founded to promote cooperation between socialist countries and liberation movements.


 
 

Acosta Danza: Evolution,

28 October 2019 - 11 April 2020, UK tour

With its mix of ballet and contemporary dance, Carlos Acosta’s Cuban company brings a new programme, in which Acosta himself makes a guest appearance, which includes Paysage, Soudain, la nuit by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg; the iconic Rooster, choreographed by Christopher Bruce; and a new work, Satori, by breakthrough Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso.



 

Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas, Fri 1 November, London


Award winning Cuban guitarist Ahmed champions a repertoire that shows the diversity, compositional styles and tendencies found in Cuban composers from diverse generations. Here he performs pieces by Leo Brouwer, Eduardo Martin, Walfrido Dominguez and Jose Antonio Rojas. 


 
 
 
 

Screening: 'Simply Korda' + Q&A with director Roberto Chile, Sat 9 November, London


Free screening of a short documentary about Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, who photographed the Cuban Revolution until the late 60s and shot the iconic picture of Che Guevara. Cuban cameraman and director Roberto Chile will be making a special appearance to talk about the film and his own historic photographic work.


 
 

5th Havana Glasgow Film Festival,

12-16 November, Glasgow

This year the film festival celebrates 50 years of ICAIC – the Cuban Film Institute – with screenings of some truly classic Cuban films made by the legendary Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Fresa y Chocolate) and Jorge Perugorría (Se Vende). Mirtha Ibarra, top actor and wife of the late Alea, will visit from Cuba. Plus dance, talks and workshops and a photography exhibition.


 

Omar Puente and friends,

Fri 22 November, London

Cuban jazz violinist Omar Puente is performing a very special show in honour of his wife, campaigner Debbie Purdy who died in 2014. Omar will showcase work from throughout his career for solo violin, piano duo, and with his new project Classico Latino Sextet. Puente will be joined by some very special guests including pianist Alex Wilson, saxophonist Courtney Pine, trombonist Dennis Rollins plus some surprise appearances.


 
 
 
 

Roberto Fonseca, Sun 1 December, London 


Roberto Fonseca is a Cuban pianist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and bandleader. Havana-born and based, he has released nine solo albums, collaborated across genres, been nominated for a Grammy Award and toured the world several times over. Just released this month is his new album 'Yesun'.

Eliades Ochoa, Wed 26 February 2020, London

Eliades is still known as Mr Chan Chan in his hometown of Santiago de Cuba. He played the first notes on his guitar at the age of six, and at twelve he walked around town singing what he had learned from the radio – the rest is eternal Cuban music history. His unique guitar and vocal style has made him a champion of string and percussion driven son, bolero and guaracha.
