The city of Havana, celebrating 500 years this month, has been a muse, a protagonist and also a cliché in many films over the years. This emotional list of films by a Cuban journalist looks at the diverse and interesting roles Havana has played over the years - from Memories of Underdevelopment to Juan of the Dead.


 
 

Poster art: a chronicle of the Revolution

"Graphic posters were useful in every sphere. They advertised mobile medical teams, encouraged people to save electricity, celebrated heroic struggles, monitored sugar production, promoted women’s liberation, advertised the latest films or ballet productions, and proclaimed international solidarity. " As an exhibition of Cuban poster art shows in London until January, this examines the history behind the genre.


 

United States prohibits educational and cultural exchange with Cuban state bodies and officials

As part of the growing wave of aggression by Trump's government against Cuba, following the vote at the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly against the blockade, the US has just banned the federal government from financing educational and cultural exchange activities with Cuban state representatives and entities.

Designed in Cuba: Cold War Graphics, now until 19 January 2020, London


A major exhibition of graphic design from Cuba’s ‘golden age’. It brings together 115 posters and 70 magazines distributed across the globe by OSPAAAL: an organisation founded to promote cooperation between socialist countries and liberation movements.


 
 

Acosta Danza: Evolution,

28 October 2019 - 11 April 2020, UK tour

With its mix of ballet and contemporary dance, Carlos Acosta’s Cuban company brings a new programme, in which Acosta himself makes a guest appearance, which includes Paysage, Soudain, la nuit by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg; the iconic Rooster, choreographed by Christopher Bruce; and a new work, Satori, by breakthrough Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso.



 

5th Havana Glasgow Film Festival,

3-16 November, Glasgow

This year the film festival celebrates 50 years of ICAIC – the Cuban Film Institute – with screenings of some truly classic Cuban films made by the legendary Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Fresa y Chocolate) and Jorge Perugorría (Se Vende). Mirtha Ibarra, top actor and wife of the late Alea, will visit from Cuba. Plus dance, talks and workshops and a photography exhibition.


 
 
 
 

Daniel Diaz: Longing, until 11 January 2020, London


New exhibition of paintings by London-based Cuban artist Daniel Diaz. A colourful vision of English landscapes  re-imagined by the artist. With a special celebration of the 500th anniversary of Havana at the restaurant venue on Sat 16 November with Cuban singer 1-5pm. Booking necessary for the event. 


 
 

Omar Puente and friends,

Fri 22 November, London

Cuban jazz violinist Omar Puente is performing a very special show in honour of his wife, campaigner Debbie Purdy who died in 2014. Omar will showcase work from throughout his career for solo violin, piano duo, and with his new project Classico Latino Sextet. Puente will be joined by some very special guests including pianist Alex Wilson, saxophonist Courtney Pine, trombonist Dennis Rollins plus some surprise appearances.


 

CineCuba: Memories of Underdevelopment,

Mon 25 November, London

Free CineCuba screening of Cuban classic feature film Memories of Underdevelopment’ (1968) Director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s cinematic style was as radical as the times he chronicled. The film stands as a biting indictment of its protagonist’s disengagement and an extraordinary glimpse of life in post-Revolutionary Cuba.


 
 
 
 

Roberto Fonseca, Sun 1 December, London 


Roberto Fonseca is a Cuban pianist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and bandleader. Havana-born and based, he has released nine solo albums, collaborated across genres, been nominated for a Grammy Award and toured the world several times over. Just released this month is his new album 'Yesun'.

Eliades Ochoa, Wed 26 February 2020, London

Eliades is still known as Mr Chan Chan in his hometown of Santiago de Cuba. He played the first notes on his guitar at the age of six, and at twelve he walked around town singing what he had learned from the radio – the rest is eternal Cuban music history. His unique guitar and vocal style has made him a champion of string and percussion driven son, bolero and guaracha.
